CBC News – U.S. Border Officers Ordered to Interrogate Travellers with Iranian Links at Canada-U.S. Border, Says Memo

Despite reports that up to 200 travellers of Iranian descent were detained at the Blaine Peace Arch crossing on Jan. 4-5, U.S. Customs Border Protection (CBP) has denied such allegations. However, a memo obtained by CBC News instructs U.S. border officers in the Seattle Field Office to cast a wide net when interrogating travellers, following the U.S. assassination of Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani on Jan. 3.

The coronavirus outbreak has stoked fear among many Canadians, but none more intensely than members of the Chinese Canadian community, who fear a repeating history of discrimination. At a press conference on Wednesday, Toronto councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam urged the public to ‘not give into to xenophobia and racism’ against the Chinese Canadian community, alongside Mayor John Tory.

Le Devoir – Trois ans plus tard, Québec se souvient de l’attentat à la mosquée

C’est dans une église mercredi soir que des membres de la communauté musulmane ont souligné le triste anniversaire de l’attentat à la Grande Mosquée de Québec qui, il y a trois ans, avait fait six morts. Le comité organisateur de l’événement avait invité les proches des victimes comme le grand public à un souper communautaire à l’église Saint-Mathieu de Sainte-Foy. Malgré la tristesse de l’occasion, la soirée s’est déroulée dans une atmosphère presque joyeuse nourrie par la présence de nombreux enfants.

ICI Alberta – Des ophtalmologiste de Calgary offrent des consultations à moindre coût aux immigrants

L’organisme Immigrant Services Calgary s’est associé aux médecins de Nation’s Vision pour offrir régulièrement dans ses locaux du centre-ville des consultations d’ophtalmologie. L’objectif est de rendre ces soins de santé plus accessibles à la population immigrante. La santé oculaire est rarement la priorité des immigrants, constate la coordonnatrice des communications et du marketing d’Immigrant Services Calgary, Susy Alfaro.

Leaders of Toronto’s Chinese-Canadian community held a news conference Wednesday to address emerging discrimination and stigmatization directed at the group amid the coronavirus outbreak. “We wish that we were not talking about this, especially during the auspicious time of Lunar New Year. But we have to. Because we are facing an emergency,” Amy Go, interim National President of the Chinese Canadian National Council for Social Justice, said.

Toronto Star – Canada Closes Visa Offices in China Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

According to Visa Facilitation Services, a private company tasked with processing Canadian visa applications, all 11 of its centres will be closed until at least Monday, pending further notification from Chinese authorities. The centres are located in Beijing, Shenyang, Jinan, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Kunming and Wuhan, the city in Hubei province at the heart of the new coronavirus outbreak. As of Wednesday, more than 6,000 cases have been confirmed in China, with at least 132 deaths.
