Forbes – Immigrants Flock to Canada, While U.S. Declines

New data show the number of people immigrating to Canada increased by 26% between 2015 and 2019, and is projected to rise higher as the country seeks to overcome the aging of its workforce – a serious problem in all Western nations. In the United States, legal immigration fell by 7% between FY 2016 and FY 2018, and is expected to decline even more sharply due to Trump administration policies.

CBC News – ‘There Is Not Opportunities for You’: Immigrants Want More Than Entry-Level Jobs

Juliana Walckoff says if Premier Blaine Higgs has any hope of attracting 10,000 immigrants every year to New Brunswick, the employment barriers newcomers face must be addressed. Walckoff, a marketing consultant from Brazil, settled in Dieppe three years ago after immigrating to Canada and living in British Columbia and Toronto. Walckoff works with international teams from her home office, and finding work in her field has never been a problem. But she has seen countless newcomers struggle to find work in their respective fields.

CBC News – Rail Blockades Could Affect Vote to Change Citizenship Oath: Conservative Critic

Blockades by Indigenous protesters will make it harder for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to adopt planned legislation to add respect for First Nations treaties to Canada’s citizenship oath, says Conservative immigration critic Peter Kent. “It will be difficult to engage in debate of this piece of legislation without the shadow of this week’s illegal blockades and the refusal of some in the Indigenous community, and many beyond the Indigenous community, to respect the rule of law,” Kent told CBC News on Friday.

Global News – ‘It’s a Wonderful Day’: 55 New Canadian Citizens Welcomed in Halifax

With a massive Canadian flag in the background, immigrants from 22 countries took the Oath of Citizenship at HMCS Scotian. For Ghenwa Bteddini of Lebanon, the event was a long time coming for her family. “It’s a wonderful day,” she said. “We are so happy and so proud to be Canadian.” The Bteddinis left Lebanon four-and-a-half years ago, with a priority of moving to a peaceful country. But Ghenwa says they were surprised by how well her family was received.
