National Post – Canadian Government Battles Refugee Board to Deport Doctor Who Conducted ‘Virginity Tests’ in Afghanistan

Global News reports that Saida Ahmadi worked at a hospital in northern Afghanistan before coming to Canada in 2017 and making a refugee claim. Officials have accused Ahmadi of performing virginity tests at the “request of the state” and testifying on the results in court. The Canadian government said that aiding such prosecutions are a crime against humanity. Ahmadi had said she believed that the tests were performed with consent from the women and that she would not have done the tests had she known they would be used in an Afghan court.

CBC News – What Happened Behind the Scenes as RIAC Tried to Avoid Shutting Down

When the Refugee and Immigrant Advisory Council suddenly closed its doors last fall after 36 years of service, there were few details about why. CBC News has found that, behind the scenes, the St. John’s group was facing an internal crisis, looking for more government funding to hire an external consultant to address its “financial instability” — even though RIAC had received a lump sum from the province in the weeks leading up to its closure.

CBC News – Canada Funding Migrant-Blocking Operations in Countries with Poor Human Rights Records

The Trudeau government has contributed the funding via “Project Relay,” an Interpol operation. Deployed in 2017 and 2018, the initiative worked to better equip seven Southeast Asian countries in the detection of irregular migrants and smugglers. Back in May 2019, CBC News/Radio-Canada revealed details of Canada’s fight against irregular migration. At the time, despite repeated requests, the federal government refused to name the countries that received Canadian aid to hold back irregular migrants.

Globe and Mail – Woman Accused of Spying for Russia Asks Court to Overturn Deportation Order

Elena Crenna, the 58-year-old woman at the centre of the case, was not present at the hearing in Ottawa on Wednesday because she has left Canada over fears of a deportation order. Ms. Crenna’s lawyer, Arghavan Gerami, argued her client was working in the interests of Canada when she met with the FSB, the Russian security agency, in the 1990s. Ms. Crenna was working for Canadian David Crenna, who was overseeing a Russian housing project supported by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. when she was approached by the FSB.

Toronto Star – Canadian Officials Reviewing Border Policy as COVID-19 Spreads Across the U.S.

Jean-Pierre Fortin, the national president of the Customs and Immigration Union, told the Star Wednesday that his members’ immediate concern is more support from Health Canada at the country’s major airports — including Toronto’s Pearson International. But Fortin said there are currently no Health Canada officials at major land crossings, and the government is reviewing its land border crossing policies as Canada’s closest neighbour struggles to contain the virus.
