U.S. President Donald Trump’s White House had been discussing the possibility of beefing up its military presence at the Canada-U.S. border, with the aim of assisting border guards in their attempts to catch irregular crossers. Trudeau said Wednesday that the idea of militarizing the Canada-U.S. border is no longer in play.

Halifax Refugee Clinic executive director Julie Chamagne said asylum seekers and refugees are “some of the most marginalized and vulnerable people in the world” and that denying their entry to Canada is “inhumane.” “It is very saddening. I think that it’s unnecessary, even in the extenuating circumstances, and it’s in contravention of international legal obligations that we have, of humanitarian moral obligations that we have, towards people fleeing persecution,” said Chamagne.

Des travailleurs étrangers temporaires mis à pied en raison de la COVID-19 se retrouvent dans un état plus précaire que jamais. Le type de permis qu’ils possèdent les empêche de trouver un nouvel emploi, et ce, même s’ils pourraient faire oeuvre utile dans les services essentiels. C’est le cas de Gaétan De Bruyn, un homme de 44 ans originaire de Belgique. Établis à Pont-Rouge, près de Québec, sa femme et lui ont tous deux été mis à pied dans les derniers jours. Comme des milliers d’autres travailleurs étrangers temporaires, M. De Bruyn possède un permis de travail fermé. Ce document lui donne le droit de travailler dans un poste précis, pour un seul employeur.

Pourquoi ce n’est que des Blancs qui nous parlent dans les médias ? Comment ça se fait qu’on ne voie aucun représentant des minorités culturelles s’adresser à elles comme on s’adresse à moi ?

Early statistics are starting to trickle in on the effect of Canada-U.S. travel restrictions, allowing a first measure of the monumental impact on cross-border movement. What the numbers show is a dramatic plunge not only for personal travel — but also for cargo travel. That’s despite the border still being open to cargo and several other types of travel: students, military, certain workers, and permanent residents are allowed to cross. The preliminary data shows an 82 per cent drop in border crossings from the U.S. into Canada by land, and a 96 per cent plunge in arrivals on U.S. flights.

Those hoping to come to Canada for school are being victimized by scammers who promise to help them, according to Edmonton police. Police say they received 17 reports of such scams in 2019, with 16 victims reporting an overall loss of more than $730,000. The scam typically unfolds like this: immigrants going through the process of coming to Canada on a student visa are contacted online by someone claiming to know an immigration attorney.
