The six people were turned away between March 21, when the new measures came into effect, and April 2, Canada Border Services Agency spokesman Louis-Carl Brissette Lesage said. In early March, between 70 and 80 asylum seekers had been crossing daily, according to Jean-Pierre Fortin, president of the Customs and Immigration Union. He said most were originally from Africa.

Global News – COVID-19 Researcher Gains Canadian Citizenship Through Historic Virtual Ceremony

A University of Manitoba professor who has gained government funding to research solutions to the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic was granted Canadian citizenship — without having to leave his home. Dr. Adolf Ng took part in the first-ever virtual citizenship ceremony Wednesday, according to a social media post from Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada, in order to meet what they called an “urgent need to facilitate COVID-19 research.”

Global News – The Number of Detainees Held in Canada’s Immigration Holding Centres Is Declining Amid COVID-19 Fears

Dozens of people who were held in Canada’s immigration detention facilities have been released over the last week as advocates and lawyers have called for their release amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to data obtained from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) by Global News, the total number of immigration detainees held in all three of Canada’s immigration holding centres dropped to 64 as of April 1 from 98 on March 25.

Les producteurs maraîchers demandent aux gouvernements de partager avec eux les risques financiers qu’implique la production de fruits et de légumes à l’ère de la COVID-19. Les agriculteurs souhaitent notamment recevoir de l’aide pour payer les salaires des travailleurs étrangers temporaires pendant leur quarantaine. Le gouvernement fédéral leur a récemment annoncé qu’ils devront rémunérer ces travailleurs pendant leur période d’isolement sans pouvoir avoir recours à leurs services.

CBC News – Any Child in Immigration Detention Is One Too Many, Says Psychiatrist

In 2011, Dr. Rachel Kronick, then a student, was part of a research team based at McGill University, working alongside Janet Cleveland, a researcher with a public health institution and Cécile Rousseau, clinical psychiatrist at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. The CBSA granted them access to migrant holding centres in Toronto, Ont., and Laval, Que. According to their research, they heard of: three cases of parents being handcuffed in front of their children; a mother and her children who had to wait outside in the snow for 40 minutes before eating breakfast at around 5 a.m.; and two mothers separated from infants they were nursing.
