Toronto Star – Shree Paradkar: Good God, Canada, Migrants Are Not Criminals. Release Them All
Canadian policies are taking people at the most unstable moments in their lives and putting them in harm’s way — by turning some back to the U.S. where they are trapped between the cruelty of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and the virulence of COVID. And by exposing others to a catastrophic risk cooped up in Canadian cells, excluded from its public health measures including social distancing.
National Post – With COVID-19 Clampdown, Number of Asylum Seekers at Canada-U.S. Border Slows to a Trickle
Six asylum seekers were turned back at Canada’s border with the United States under recent COVID-19 restrictions, four of them irregular border crossers, from March 21 to April 2, according to data from Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). Only one asylum seeker has been allowed to proceed into Canada under exemptions to the closed border rule, which could mean the person was an American citizen.
Calgary Herald – COVID-19: Calgary Organizations Support Recent Immigrants Through Coronavirus Troubles
Around two dozen people are currently living in the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society’s (CCIS) Margaret Chisholm Resettlement Centre. Typically, the space can house about 80 individuals but in an effort to curb the potential exposure and spread of COVID-19, leadership has been steadily reducing these numbers. The CCIS is a non-profit organization that historically, in partnership with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calgary, has been responsible for 80 per cent of private refugee sponsorship coming into Calgary.
CTV News – ‘We Want To Join This Fight’: Immigrant Physicians Make Plea to Serve on Front Lines of COVID-19
In his home country of Sri Lanka, Sagara Wijesooriya has worked on the front lines to combat the deadly spread of malaria, cholera and dengue fever. The International Medical Graduate (IMG) moved to Edmonton in March 2013 with 10 years of experience handling ventilators as a leading anesthesiologist. The arrival of COVID-19 was, he thought, the perfect opportunity for him to utilize those skills once again, but the struggle to gain a license in Canada has held him back.

International medical graduates who’ve passed their exams to practise in Canada, or have graduated from school in the past two years, can now apply for a supervised 30-day medical licence in Ontario to help fight COVID-19. The short-term licence, called a Supervised Short Duration Certificate, allows some foreign-trained physicians and domestic medical school graduates to practise under supervision at public hospitals, psychiatric facilities and Crown agencies.
CBC News – Haitian Girl Reunited with Adoptive Family in Canada After 10 Years
It was a long time coming, with several bumps along the way, but an orphaned girl from Haiti has finally been allowed to move to Canada to live with her adoptive family. Widlene Earle was just four years old when she was accepted into the family of Vaden Earle, who is originally from Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula but now lives in southern Ontario. The girl was living with her grandmother in the Dominican Republic in 2009 when they met Vaden, who was doing humanitarian work in the country.
