CBC News – Pandemic Complicates Life for Hundreds of Refugees Hoping to Stay in Sudbury

Maureen had started building a new life in Canada, even when she wasn’t sure she’d be allowed to stay here. And now even that is on hold for the refugee from Kenya now living in Sudbury — because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Maureen, who CBC has agreed not to fully identify, finished her training this spring to be a personal support worker, which is in high demand now at nursing homes. But she’s had to turn down jobs she desperately needs in order to look after her son.

MacLean’s – Alex Neve: Coronavirus Measures From Governments Need Human Rights Oversight

Absolutely everything about confronting the COVID-19 pandemic is connected to human rights. There can be little debate about that. But agreeing that human rights are at stake does not automatically mean they will be upheld. That requires concrete action. And that is why 301 organizations and experts across Canada have called on the country’s governments to institute human rights oversight.

London Free Press – Refugee Claimants in London, Nationwide Stuck in Legal Limbo as COVID-19 Pandemic Slows Applications

The COVID-19 pandemic has left thousands of refugee claimants across the country in legal limbo as cases aren’t moving forward and many services they need have been reduced. Though the government continues to receive new applications, all hearings, interviews and appeals have been put on hold as measures to stop the spread of the virus remain in place. The move, though necessary in the face of the pandemic, is likely to create a backlog of cases in the system, further delaying a resolution to cases that sometimes take years to resolve.

National Post – Doing Good: Refugee Family Pays It Forward with $1.6M Donation to Hospitals Fighting COVID-19

In 1972, Nimi Nanji-Simard and her family got word that they, along with 60 000 other Ugandans of South Asian lineage, had 90 days to leave the country. Nimi and her three siblings were among the thousands airlifted to Montreal on mercy flights. The Nanji family never forgot. Their latest donation of $1.6 million is to be split equally by 16 Canadian hospitals to help combat COVID-19 through research and staff support.

CTV News – Canada-U.S. Border Cracks Open to Asylum-Seekers Under New Closure Arrangement

The Canada-U.S. border has opened slightly to asylum seekers under the new framework unveiled this week extending the historic shutdown. Those who have been crossing irregularly into Canada are still being turned back. But the federal order laying out the terms of the new border arrangements says those who arrive at formal land border offices and meet certain criteria will be allowed in.
