One of his clients, a young single mother from East Africa, arrived in Canada seeking protection on March 20, 2020. She was referred to a temporary shelter and put in touch with a lawyer to help with her application for refugee status. A week later, immigration offices started to close.

Suhaiba Ahmed, owner of Nile Bridal and Alterations in South Pointe, has made between 200 and 300 masks for people staying at the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba. She says it’s something her mother — who taught her how to sew and to help others — would do. “Doing these masks is not easy,” said Ahmed, adding that she spent between 10 and 15 hours per day making them last week.
Global News – Canada Is Releasing Immigration Detainees at ‘Unprecedented’ Rates Amid COVID-19 Fears
On March 17, there were 353 immigration detainees held in provincial jails and immigration holding centres across Canada, according to data from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). By April 19, that number dropped by more than half to 147 detainees, 117 of whom were being held in provincial jails. The remaining 30 were held in one of Canada’s three immigration holding centres located in Toronto, Laval, Que., and Surrey, B.C.

As travel restrictions remain in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Canada, newcomers to Nova Scotia whose plans were to be reunited with their loved ones have been put on the back burner. In recent weeks, several airlines have halted international travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Air Canada recently announced it is suspending most international flights until June, while Air Transit and Sunwing Airlines Ltd. have canceled all trips until May 31.

Elle espère ainsi honorer la mémoire de sa mère décédée il y a un an. Dans son atelier de South Pointe, la propriétaire de Nile Bridal and Alterations, Suhaiba Ahmed a déjà produit près de 300 masques pour de nouveaux arrivants fréquentant l’Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM).

Among the items she took with her to Windsor, Ont. were five of her poetry books — two of which remain unpublished. She spoke to CBC News in Dari, one of the languages spoken in Afghanistan, about the difficulties she faced when she first moved to Canada and how poetry has helped her find a deeper connection to her new home.
