National Post – Canadian Community Organizations, Advocates Fill Information Gaps on COVID-19 for Non-English Speakers

When Mary Rose Manzano-Leal called Filipino employees of a coronavirus-stricken meat-packing plant in Alberta last month, the physician says they expressed relief as soon she began speaking their language. “When I tell them that I can speak Tagalog … they suddenly perk up and become interested in speaking with me.” Across Canada, community organizations, advocates, researchers and health workers are filling gaps in information about COVID-19 in languages other than English.

Parliamentarians and human-rights groups, including Amnesty International, are urging Canada to open its doors to people fleeing Hong Kong in the wake of Beijing’s decision to impose a national security law on the former British colony. They also called on Canadian lawmakers to resume parliamentary hearings on Canada-China relations and to be prepared to slap sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for quashing dissent in Hong Kong. Nearly 50 Hong Kong residents, most of them activists, have already applied for refugee status in Canada.

CBC News – How Filipino-Canadian Care Aides Are Disproportionately Affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic

The epicentre of B.C.’s COVID-19 outbreak has been long-term care homes and assisted living facilities, where a disproportionate number of care aides are Filipina women, according to Leonora Angeles, an associate professor with UBC’s Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice. Due to federal immigration and labour policies such as the Live-in Caregiver Program, many Filipino-Canadians are kept working in low-wage sectors such as domestic child care and seniors’ care, she said.
