CBC News – Liberal MP Takes Stock of Government’s Action on Anti-Black Racism and Says There’s More to Do
Greg Fergus spent much of last week in video conferences, talking to black Canadians and community leaders. The Liberal MP for Hull-Aylmer and chair of the parliamentary black caucus says many people are “traumatized.” But, he said, they also know that this moment is an opportunity for other Canadians to “finally see the systemic barriers that are in place here.”
Toronto Star – ‘The Hurdles I Have to Jump Are Unbelievable:’ How Systemic Racism in Banks and Support Networks Is Holding Back Black Entrepreneurs
Before Pauline Thomas started her own business, Comfort Bras, she worked a corporate job at a multibillion-dollar firm and brought home a six-figure salary. But whenever she applied for a bank loan, it wasn’t the dollar figure the person on the other side of the counter saw, it was her skin colour. The day she applied for a mortgage and was asked for document after document to prove her income and how she made it — far more hurdles than she suspected her white counterparts would face — she called the bank employee out.
Global News – Supporters Want Commitment on Status for Asylum Seekers on Quebec COVID-19 Front Lines
Demonstrators were back in front of the prime minister’s riding office in Montreal demanding a firm commitment from the federal and provincial governments for asylum seekers working on Quebec’s COVID-19 front lines. A few hundred — in cars, on bicycles or on foot — met in front of Justin Trudeau’s Montreal office on Saturday, a second demonstration by the group Standing for Dignity in the past two weeks.
CBC News – How the Spectacle of U.S. Racism Allows Canada to Overlook Its Own
While media attention is fixed on racism and police brutality in the United States, we in Canada risk overlooking disturbing truths at home. “There is a common perception among Canadians that because anti-Black racism is not manifested in the same way, the same spectacular, gory way that it is in the United States, then anti-Black racism is not really a factor in Canadian society,” said Wednell Nii Laryea Adjetey, an assistant professor of history at McGill University. “Of course, that is grossly inaccurate and misguided.”
