CBC News – Pandemic Slows Immigrant Arrivals to Nova Scotia to a Trickle

The COVID-19 virus may bring an end to Nova Scotia’s streak of record-breaking immigration increases. “The landings for the month of April are low, very low, relative to what we would have expected prior to COVID,” Immigration Minister Lena Diab said Thursday. According to the Office of Immigration, 45 people arrived in Nova Scotia in April, a fraction of the 543 immigrants who arrived in April 2019 and the 547 who came that month the year before.

CBC News – Canada Suspends Extradition Treaty with Hong Kong Over New Security Law

Canada is suspending its extradition treaty with Hong Kong as part of a package of responses to the new security law China has imposed on the region, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday. Canada will also treat sensitive goods being exported to Hong Kong as if they were being sent to mainland China. China imposed strict new controls on Hong Kong this week, meant to give Beijing more power to police anti-government protests and other activities it considers the work of hostile foreign powers.

Globe and Mail – No Indication Canada Will Make Special Accommodations for Migrants Fleeing Hong Kong

The Canadian government is so far giving no indication that it’s prepared to make special accommodations to welcome a possible exodus of Hong Kongers after China imposed a new security law on the former British colony. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison signalled on Thursday that his government may follow Britain in offering visas to Hong Kong citizens after China passed a law granting Beijing sweeping new powers to crack down on dissent in the Asian city.

Globe and Mail – Data Show Poverty, Overcrowded Housing Connected to COVID-19 Rates Among Racial Minorities in Toronto

In the areas with the highest rates of known coronavirus infections, Black people make up 18 per cent of the population – even though they account for just 9 per cent of the city’s population. Torontonians of Latin American, South Asian and Southeast Asian descent are also overrepresented in pockets of the city pummelled by the virus. Conversely, people of East Asian descent and white people are underrepresented in neighbourhoods with the highest infection rates, Toronto Public Health found in an analysis released Thursday.

CBC News – How Undocumented Migrant Workers Are Slipping Through Ontario’s COVID-19 Net

The house where the undocumented workers live isn’t hard to find. Located just 100 metres from one of Leamington, Ontario’s main intersections, the sprawling structure has clearly seen better days. The paint is peeling, shingles are curling, and some of its filthy windows are cracked. Yet it is home for nearly 20 foreign farm labourers — most of them lacking the proper permits to work in Canada. Men who are now trying to balance concerns about COVID-19 with fears that the act of getting tested might get them deported.
