CBC News – Canada’s Asylum Agreement with the U.S. Infringes on Charter, Says Federal Court

A Federal Court justice says the Safe Third Country Agreement — Canada’s asylum agreement with the United States — infringes upon the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and is giving the federal government six months to respond. Justice Ann Marie McDonald said the agreement — which stops people from entering either Canada or the U.S. at official Canada-U.S. border crossings and asking for asylum — violates the section of the Charter guaranteeing “the right to life, liberty and security of the person.”

Toronto Star – Canada Tells Most International Students Not to Come Until Travel Ban Is Lifted

International students have been told not to make travel plans to Canada until after Ottawa’s border restrictions are lifted. In the latest update of its program guidelines, the federal immigration department said Tuesday that international students will not be allowed to enter Canada if they have received a student visa after the country’s border lockdown on March 18. Even those who have a valid study permit from that date or earlier will be denied entry unless they can prove their travel is “non-discretionary or non-optional.”

The Guardian – Coronavirus Sheds Light on Canada’s Poor Treatment of Migrant Workers

Earlier this month, Justin Trudeau said Canada had handled the pandemic better than other countries – but the prime minister acknowledged that has not been the case when it comes to migrant farm workers. As in the US and other countries, Covid-19 has spread rapidly through farms that employ migrant workers, aided by inhumane living conditions, lack of legal rights and shoddy federal oversight – all of which predated the virus.

CTV News – Thousands of Lives on Hold as Immigration System Remains Largely Shut Down

The McCall family is one of thousands separated, some by the Canada-U.S. border, others by oceans, due to the wide-ranging impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on Canada’s immigration system. The border closure is the dominant element keeping so many apart, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested Thursday restrictions won’t lift soon.
