La Presse – Racisme à Repentigny : « Les policiers étaient toujours sur mon cas »

Des personnes issues des communautés noires marcheront à Repentigny samedi pour dénoncer le racisme et la discrimination qu’ils disent subir de la part des citoyens et des autorités. Face à cette grogne qui prend de l’ampleur depuis deux ans, le service de police a demandé à des chercheurs indépendants d’analyser les interpellations dans sa ville. Stanley Jossirain dénonce le profilage racial et la discrimination qu’il dit subir à Repentigny. L’homme de 23 ans a notamment déposé une série de plaintes devant la Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse en 2019 contre le service de police de cette ville. Deux de ses plaintes sont toujours en cours.

CTV News – Feds Inject New Funds to Help Stave Off Coronavirus Outbreaks Among Migrant Workers

In the wake of the COVID-19-related deaths of multiple migrant workers living on Canadian farms, the federal government announced just shy of $59 million in fresh funds to protect the “health and safety” of temporary foreign workers. Speaking a press conference on Friday, Trudeau said the funds would go towards ensuring “more farm inspections,” providing “emergency relief when needed” and improving “the overall living conditions on farms.”

Toronto Star – Roma Refugees’ Lawsuit Has Been Settled for $500,000. Now, Their Community Wants an Apology for Jason Kenney’s Comments

Three Toronto lawyers who were found guilty of professional misconduct in handling Roma refugees’ asylum claims have settled a class-action lawsuit by their former clients. According to a recently released settlement agreement, the insurers representing the lawyers — Viktor Hohots, Joseph Farkas and Erzsebet Jaszi — will pay approximately $500,000 in total damages to the eligible class members.

CBC News – Struggling Language Schools Launch Bid to Bring 40,000 Foreign Students to Canada for Fall Semester

Facing financial ruin due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada’s language schools have proposed an ambitious plan to bring 40,000 foreign students to Canada over the next few months to learn English and French. The Study Safe Corridor initiative, which is awaiting approval from the federal government, would see Air Canada provide charter flights to bring COVID-screened students from countries such as Turkey, Japan, South Korea and Brazil.

CBC News – Migrant Workers Says He Was Fired from Ontario Farm, Faced Deportation After Voicing COVID-19 Fears

A migrant worker says he was unfairly fired from Scotlynn Farms in southwestern Ontario and threatened with deportation after speaking out about the conditions on the farm following the death of his bunkmate from COVID-19. Luis Gabriel Flores Flores told The Current guest host Mark Kelley through a Migrant Workers Alliance (MWA) translator that he was targeted by Robert Biddle, the father of farm owner Scott Biddle, for being suspected of anonymously speaking to the media following the death of Juan Lopez Chaparro in June.

Des manifestants qui réclament qu’Ottawa et Québec accordent la résidence permanente aux demandeurs d’asile qui occupent des emplois décrétés comme étant essentiels durant la pandémie ont entamé vendredi soir un sit-in nocturne. L’évènement organisé par l’organisme à but non lucratif Debout pour la dignité se déroule devant le bureau de circonscription du premier ministre du Canada, Justin Trudeau, à Montréal.
