La population de la MRC d’Abitibi est invitée à participer à une activité Cherche et trouve qui a pour but de mettre en contact des personnes de différentes nationalités sur le territoire. L’activité se déroule à l’extérieur et amènera les participants à huit stations différentes dans la MRC, comme l’explique la conseillère en développement des entreprises et coordonnatrice de la démarche Défi RH, Sonia Tardif.

Global News – Bosnian Orphans in Calgary Fearing Deportation Due to Years-Old Adoption Oversight

Severin and Svjetlana Blagojevic were 13 and 10 when they were adopted by their uncle in Alberta in 2015 after losing their parents and spending years in foster care. Now, their lawyer Kevin Zemp is scrambling to find options after the siblings received a letter in January from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada telling them their citizenship was revoked. According to Zemp, the brother and sister had only been “partially” adopted.

CTV News – Majority of Canadians Have Lost Faith in America’s Ability to Fairly Process Refugee Claims: Survey

A new survey by the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) suggests that 60 per cent of Canadians no longer trust the U.S. to assess refugee claims, and two thirds think the Government of Canada should take responsibility for assessing claims from asylum seekers who come to Canada from the U.S. According to ACS president Jack Jedwab, these feelings could potentially be linked to how the U.S. administration is handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

CBC News – International Students Unable to Enter Canada Universities Disappointed

As the start of the academic year approaches for universities across Canada, international students must make hard decisions regarding their education. The Federal Order in Council for Minimizing the Risk of Exposure to COVID-19 in Canada outlines travel restrictions for non-Canadian citizens. The order was due to expire on July 31, but was extended to Aug. 31 with no added exemptions, meaning international students still cannot come into the country.

Chronicle Herald – Nova Scotia Groups Call for Action on Migrant Worker Rights

More than 30 organizations and unions issued an open letter to Premier Stephen McNeil and his cabinet Wednesday, calling for action to protect the health and safety of migrant workers in Nova Scotia. The letter comes after allegations by migrant workers in Nova Scotia about poor living and working conditions, wage theft and threat of deportation, as well as being restricted from leaving a strawberry farm, according to a report by The Globe and Mail.

For four weeks in April and May, 2017, then 20-year old Nedira Mustefa was detained in Clinton County Jail in upstate New York. Her first week was spent in solitary confinement. Ms. Mustefa – a Muslim – lost almost 15 pounds over those four weeks because the food she was served contained pork. So what was her “crime”? Ms. Mustefa was jailed by American authorities for attempting to seek refugee protection in Canada.
